Hello everyone, Hope you all have started the New Year of right. So I was checking my pocket change and found a small date 1982d and thought I would weigh it,just in case! Lol it was 2.5:( then I put a another coin on the see if it was weighing right and 2.3 is what it said. I checked 10 pennys and this one stayed 2.3 grams. It's a 1999D penny. I'm wondering what all coins are minted in Denver that are not the same as ours? So I really need ure thoughts on this. Here are some pics.

The penny on the right is the 2.3 gram penny. It's thicker then the one that weights 2.5.

Yes the mint target is 2.5 g. Yours might be a smidge low, but you would need a more precise scale to know for sure (nearest 0.01 g).

.12 grams +/- is mint tolerance. Look into buying a scale that goes down to 0.01 or even better 0.001.Some also come with calibration weights which is a plus.

Thanks for you're input. But the penny that weights 2.3 is the thicker penny on the right,my scale has had lots of pennys on it and never have I had any issues. Always 2.3 or 3.1, never 2.3 and the strike on that penny is very strong, I'm thinking cuz the planchet was thicker. There for a better strike. I was on hear a few years ago with a 1987D penny that was silver colored. It was 2.5 grams. Was told it had to have been dipped in some sort of acid or something. A few years later PCGS graded one exactly like my 87d. I guess what I'm saying is I really wish someone would take me more seriously and really look at my pics. I don't have the money to send my finds into a grading company. This penny is thicker then every penny I compare it to. If you look at my pics, I compared it with one that is the same date and mint mark. Thank you for ure time.

A "wider" edge could mean a slightly higher tonnage might have been applied during striking, but the weight and dimensions would still be normal.

Hello everyone. Ok update to my question about the 2.3 gram 1999d penny. So I finally got a better set of scales that go down to 0.01grams. So my penny didn't weigh in at 2.3 grams! It's 2.25 grams. I looked up the Weight Tolerance for the American penny and it said 0.1 + or -. From 1997 to 1999 the canadian penny weights 2.25 grams. I'm thinking there could be a real chance that it was struck on the canadian penny planchet? So what do you all think? Should I send it to PCGS or is it just a coincidence? Thank you for your time.

US do not struck Canadian Cents never. Only one year was Dimes and long time ago.

Yes your coin seem to be 0.1 gr. less. Thinner planchet from the begin or end or the roll. Where it is the big error you want to show. I had so many in my hand as this or heavier. I just release mean spender.
