2023-D Bessie Coleman Washington Quarter Doubled Die Reverse / DDR

NocturnalJay Valued Member United States 58 Posts	Posted 02/28/2023 2:51 pm I got my first 2023-D Washington quarter Bessie Coleman from the self check-out at Walmart. Came home and put it under the microscope and this is what I found. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, both sets of designer initials, the eye lids, fingers on the right hand, struts and nose of aircraft all show signs of doubling. There is quite a few die scratches and a nice die crack going straight through the A in STATES. I'm still trying to memorize the different classes of doubling. After reading the descriptions and looking at pics, I'm kind of leaning toward a hybrid class 2 (II) Distorted Hub Doubling (lettering) and class 6 (VI) Distended Hub Doubling (the airplane struts) or just a class 9 (IX) Single Squeeze. That makes all the lettering incused doubling, I agree. What about the aircraft? That part of the design in incised, right? Could this just be a lighting reflection making it look split? silviosi Pillar of the Community Canada 6244 Posts	Posted 05/11/2023 4:14 pm I do not see here any doubling. For those coins the Doubling is more to occur in the center of the coin. If they're incuse, then it's just incuse MD, if they're raised, then it's likely a minor DDR. Report this Post to the Staff

Although I'm still new to searching quarters, I feel this is a DDR. I'm very familiar with the hub doubling on Lincoln shield cents and the incuse lettering on your coin seems to have the same characteristics of a DDR on the shield cents. It is typically thinner and distorted looking, as yours is and just like on shield cents, your initials show the doubling. Let me find one of these quarters to compare and do a side by side pic. Erroraddict35 New Member United States 5 Posts	Posted 05/13/2023 06:28 am It looks like it's caused by the camera, however the "A" in America I believe looks like it has a die gouge, I'm not an expert but I would ask some of the more knowledgeable guys, my terminology may be wrong.
