I recently inherited a small coin collection and am trying to figure out what's here. I found this 1969 D penny, but the last 9 is missing. Can anyone help me figure out what this is, and does it make it more valuable because it is flawed? Any help is appreciated!

, glad you can ask us! This is most likely a struck thru grease coin nearly effacing the last digit in the date. Nice one to keep as a great example of such! Minor greasers like this one generally do not carry much value except for folk who collect these.

Hello Gene, and to the Forum! It appears that your LHC is an example of a " Struck Through Grease" coin, where grease on the die prevented the final 9 from being formed. It's interesting, but unfortunately does not carry a large economic premium.

I agree, a Greaser. In general flaws do not add to a coin's value, in fact, most imperfections decrease value. There are exceptions it depends on the type of flaw, and overall appearance. For example, your Greaser is overall small, but if the extent of grease is great, it may be of value.if I doubt, ask us here while you're learning.
