mods, if this belongs elsewhere, like maybe the Main Coin Forum, feel free to move it.

Has anyone ever asked around gas stations, convenience stores, or currency exchanges to see if they ever get "weird or old" coins in? I've read stories from folks who work at places like that who notice and pull silver and other things from their registers.

I'm thinking of printing up a brief business card with one of my throwaway emails and a Google Voice phone number on it to hand to clerks. Odds are most will throw it away or forget about it, but I'm thinking if even one time someone gives me a call when a customer pays with something interesting it'd be worth it.

Has anyone ever done something like this? Or, forget the business card idea, do any of you all call your local stores and gas stations to see if they ever have interesting coins come in? I figure it's one of those things where a few calls every few weeks wouldn't take much time but could result in some success.

If anyone has thoughts either way, feel free to share them. I'm looking for opinions on this.

Thanks - TSS

Silversearcher, this idea came to me a month or so ago (why did it take me this long?) and I started asking at the single store that I visit once a week (a liquor/convenience store). So far I've gotten a bicentennial Ike, a few Kennedy halves (one is a Dryer Coin), some various Sacagawea and Presidential dollars, and a $2 bill. But they are starting to keep an eye out for "interesting" coins for me. It does not hurt to build up a relationship with people who handle coins all day long. Unfortunately, all of the guys who work the till are Nepali, and really don't have a good understanding of what I'm hoping for.

Yep.... I have a good friend (owner of a local gas station) & ask him to put aside, sacagawea/presidential dollars, wheat backs, I.H.'s, silver, oddities, foreign coins & purchase them from him.

@the, I think that you have chosen the best place to post this thread, so no need to move to another subforum. As others have alluded to, I think that asking at places you normally visit will bring better results than just stopping in cold at places you never otherwise frequent. Back when I used to CRH, the tellers at my source bank all knew me and used to set aside oddities for me.

Absolutely correct, but you will get 0% of the coins you don't ask for.

I have a friend who works at a gas station, I have been getting coins from him for about 4 years. Everything from silver to wheat cents I have gotten from him. I also buy rolls of coins from him and the other workers.

at any candidate store, first spend a half, and they look at the date/edge, you'll know they're already looking for silver

I've built up a good relationship with the owner and several employees of the only convenience/liquor store that I custom. They are now holding "unusual" ones for me. Today the owner gifted me with these four. Not treasures by any stretch of the imagination, but they were free. The owner and I had a good conversation, and I let him know what I would pay for actual silver US coins.

Great finds; my friend recently gave me a Mercury head dime from 1937 as a birthday gift (my birthday is January 9).
