NGC are confident to state that coin is improperly annealed.
I must admit:- I cannot tell the difference between improper annealed, and a coin that has been messed with, to be deliberately blackened to red hot.
My question:- How do you tell the difference?

Thanks folks and sel. I'm not sure how they tell on all of these coins. The reverse on this one is lustrous like an uncirculated Lincoln.

Don't really understand how they distinguish this from toning.

Well you know what ? I'm going against NGC's attribution that this coin is improperly annealed . Look at the obverse , at least 60% of bust is light colored , and what's with those two dark spots one which is heavy on L &Y on LIBERTY . Like a Black Beauty Nickel , this coin should be all dark and not blotchy for being improperly annealed . I don't know guys , this is just my analyzed opinion . What say you ?

Perhaps NGC should tell us, why it was improperly annealed.

I'm with T-BOP. Every time one of these comes up, we have the same answers. Yes, no, environmental. Heat and chemicals, whether in the environment or man-made can turn the metal colors. I'm not a metallurgist, so I don't know. I like some toned coins and some not so much. Collect what you like.

First time I see this post. 1977D clad NI-Cu alloy and has this color on annealing? Maybe NGC is right, but will be a big exception of Calorimetry of metals and alloys. I agree with T-BOP and CUJ.
