Had this one looked at by a coin guy in hand, but not sure I agree with what he said grade/price value. Looking for opinions on grade and if you think it would grade straight. She's a beaut in person.

Nice coin! Looks to be around 65.
Why did the "coin guy" see that affected his opinion of the coin?

Ironically nothing, he thought it looked great and was MS-60. I guess I'm the harsh critic! Thought maybe it would grade higher once I looked at the magnified pictures vs through the loupe. I think part of it he was hopeful I would sell it (I'm not) so only assigned $1300 value to it. I think it's better than that.

I know someone who got ripped off when a coin store bought some morgans and a 1889cc was in there...they bought them for basically melt. I didnt know much about coins then but you could see all the lines in the hair and the breast of the eagle had lots of detail any way you have to watch out for some people this coin looks 64 to me so maybe he was grading it for what he wanted to buy it for so he could make some money selling it.

my first thought was counterfeit when I saw all dots on the gown but I found several that had the same thing. gotta be die related.
should be a mid-grade MS coin. the obv first fields look a little flat but it could be lighting. without better photos I'm going with MS64

Coin album toning. Looks to be original skin too.
Not my series and have seen few, if any, Mint State in hand.
Guess MS64 or 65.

Yes she was in a Library of coins album for the last 40 yrs. Some of the other coins are really beautifully rainbow toned and they are by far my favs, old cleaning or not they are gorgeous.

Lovely piece! I would like to see photos of the whole album if you are willing to share. Stuff like that in old albums can't be beat!

Pretty coin. I have one with almost identical obverse toning. I wouldn't have a problem with MS64.
What causes the pitting on the obverse bust? Rusty dies?

Lovely piece! I would like to see photos of the whole album if you are willing to share. I don't mind at all. Will have to wait for natural light again to get pictures of the coloring. Seems I can't capture it really without it. I have posted a few others the past couple days. I did snap a quick of the 1872 which I think has the most impressive color. A lot in the album have old cleanings to them, but there are also some real gems that don't. 1872 would be one that had an old cleaning.

This picture turned out pretty ok showing the color on these one, there are quite a few that are just dark like the 1837 too.

I saw those dots on the gown and right arm, and hadn't ever seen one like that. I thought maybe an old dip gone wrong. Spotting cleanings is one aspect of my game that needs improvement!

So this was my favorite coin I submitted to PCGS, other than being a little dull, I really liked the look of it. Just got the grade back today and it came back UNC - details Altered surfaces. My guess is over dipped or something? Or am I missing something more obvious? I did reach out and ask if they could elaborate or let me know if conservation would help it etc, but I do not expect to learn anything beyond their "Altered surfaces" definition. Anyone have luck resubmitting or submitting elsewhere, or trying conservation? I should have it back by wednesday/thursday. Thanks
