<BG> No need to snipe and wipe out my NYITL funds. https://www.ebay.com/itm/204211797861Its a mistake realeswatcher I have seen before confusing the "6" with a "5" - still a good coin. $1,000-up. As you know realeswatcher the 1816 WOI restrike is the MOST COMMON date. John Lorenzo Edited by colonialjohn 01/12/2023 2:44 pm

John, definitely HAVE seen the 1816 Ca (wishfully?) confused for the 1815 (this is an issue on other War of Independence emissions also)... but I think this might actually be a 5. -- First, we look at the top of the digit in question - it's definitively flat, and then cuts down at a pointed angle. I have assumed that a 6/5 overdate exists besides just a "plain 6", as you see some specimens that look pretty plainly like an edited 5. Either way, I think this die began its life as an "1815". -- Then, looking at the all-important lower left portion... It looks like we have a defined break there, forming the tail of a 5 rather than a closed loop of a 6. It doesn't look like any strike weakness or planchet flaw is obscuring that exact spot. -- Aside from looking at the digit itself, it's of course near impossible to compare other die diagnostics due to the nature of the coinage. I wouldn't bet my life on it... and I know some other definite 1815 dates look a bit different (with the 5 spread out further from the 1). Would be nice to find another example with matching placement where the digit(s) are crisper. This happens to be an aesthetically more pleasing example as the overstrike was applied strongly with the new bust displaying nearly unobstructed. Good study coin!

You are right! ... with your reworked and sharpened photo its an 1815!!! Great piece! Luckily I have one already. I was told the 1815 Restrike is slightly more rare than the 1822 Restrike. Your thoughts? JPL

Both are scarce, but I don't track/follow these closely enough to say specifically. A quick ACsearch shows... *EDIT* about the same amount of appearances for both dates (hyperlinks won't show correctly, copy/paste each string):
acsearch.info/search.html?term=1815+(chih+chihuahua+"Ca"+CaRP+"RP"+"RP")+"8+reales"&category=1-2
acsearch.info/search.html?term=1822+(chih+chihuahua+"Ca"+CaRP+"RP"+"RP")+"8+reales"&category=1-2

I had that one added to my favorites on Stacks, thought that result was a bit high, seems like there is quite a premium lately for the "finest known". Or maybe that has always been the case, I am less experienced than many on this forum.

Interesting piece realeswatcher. I did also see a 1813 LCM counterstamped Chihuahua (not overstruck type) snuck into on of Stack's mixed lots 58053 last night. I'm a little suspicious of it... not a lot of examples of that stamp to go off of.
