So I was working and I found this coin in the parking lot. I am not too familiar with the 1847 Seated Liberty dollar coin. I did some research on my own and I definitely question the authenticity of the coin. From what I understand, carson city did not begin producing this coin until the 1870's. My 1847 coin has the CC emblem underneath the eagle. Can someone tell me if by chance the coin was ever produced in that year at carson city?

Welcome to the forum. You found the right place for an answer. A picture or link would help immensely. I would be hanging around that parking lot if I were you looking for more coins, that's for sure.

I don't know much about CC dollars but I don't think they were made in 1847 either.

Maybe you have a Trade dollar 1874 and got the numbers in the date mixed up. Liberty is sitting on a Trade dollar too, just a different design completely. There is a such thing as a 1874 CC in the Trade dollar series.

Hello t12igger, and welcome!

This coin is a counterfeit, almost certainly made recently in China and likely sold into the USA via ebay. There are many, many fake coins in the market today and some of those (like your piece) combine impossible dates, mintmarks, and/or designs. These are the easy ones to spot. Other examples replicate genuine designs pretty well and are the real problems for collectors.

There is a great incentive for counterfeiters to produce these fakes. A genuine 1847 Seated Liberty (Philadelphia, not Carson City!) in the condition of your fake would sell for well over $500. As counterfeiters become more sophisticated and the quality of the bogus coins improves, the problem is just going to get bigger.

Welcome to the Forum

Carson City didn't start mintage coinage until 1870. The coin is defiantly a Chinese counterfeit. A lot of times they don't care about dates, they just copy whatever they can.

I gotta say though...that's the coolest parking lot find I have ever heard of. Best I ever got was an AA token...and I don't drink

EDIT: Man I gotta learn to type faster.

So pretty much my coin is worth zilch. Yea. Maybe i'll just keep it for memories haha. I don't want it getting out and messing with some honest coin collector out there. Thanks for the info guys.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, obvious fake.....I'm guessing some angered collector tossed it after realizing this.

Or maybe someone just bought it as a joke.

Well, If it was worth anything, I hope it was worth getting you interested in this great hobby and coming back again. Heck, why even leave? It's sort of like the Hotel California only a lot nicer.

I actually used to collect coins when I was very young. All over the country. Someone a few years ago stole them all. It was very disheartening. Maybe I should pick it up again ^_^
