Hello, I'm new to coin collecting as I help my grandma with her collection. I am currently using a micro fibre/jewellery cleaning rag to somewhat clean coins, is it ok to continue to use them or would a different type of cloth be better?

As a general rule, you should never clean any coin.
In almost every case, to do so will most probably decrease it's value.

I'm not using any polish, I'm just kind of rubbing the coin lightly, pic below for reference. The one on the left is one I have "cleaned" and the other isn't, the first one was similar to the second. My grandma likes it clean as she doesn't want to sell. Am I damaging the coin by doing this?

As a general rule: never clean a coin. 100% pure acetone is ok but never rub a coin in any way.

If a coin has numismatic value they should not be cleaned by rubbing, touching them. But in my opinion if they are common circulated coins worth only face value, go ahead make them look shiny. It's up to you to determine what coins are more valuable than face value.

Agree, coins shouldn't be subjected to rubbing. That said, if the coins have no numismatic value and are highly sentimental in nature, then you're certainly free to do what you want. Chemically-charged cloth is likely to damage the coin--perhaps unsightly staining in years to come. And that's aside from any rub marks/abrasions.

The set rule is to never clean a coin, especially if it is a high value or rare coin. Years ago, my dealer was presented with a rare, rare coin. Unfortunately the coin was cleaned, and not very well. The coin went from extremely valuable to an offer of $150.00. It was apparently VERY poorly cleaned and totally damaged. Now, this kind of thing doesn't happen every day but, it can. I won't buy a cleaned coin no matter what the price. Just saying and yes, it's to each their own. My advise is to always know what you're cleaning - research, research, research or don't clean at all. There's so much more to any coin than just the luster.

The best cleaning cloth .the one you left in the closet !
Reminds me of the time years ago when a client walked into
My Coin Shop with a beautiful complete set of Peace dollars
1921 to 1935 . The set all housed in an old style Whitman
Made a very nice offer on the set . Client said they would
Think about it for awhile .
Came back a month or so later , all the coins nicely polished up
with Silvo and a buffing cloth .
Surely you will offer more now .. I just about cried !

1. collect coins
2. Never clean them or polish them.
