Hey I just got this 1857 flying eagle today. What would you say it grades? I'm know its not going to be high, but I would like your comments. I know the pics aren't great, but these were the clearest ones. I also got this Morgan today. Would you say it is Good?

The Morgan would be AG-3 overall (G-4 details) because of the lack of full rims, like my 1894-S.I won't venture on the Flying Eagle, is that wear on "United States Of", a weak strike, or both? The reverse is at least Good. Certainly not the worst Flying Eagle cent I've ever seen....

Neat! Thanks for the link, KurtS. It looks like that the "United States Of" letters are weak on the bottom even on the higher grade example pictured in the other thread, so this could be a characteristic of the "Snow-16" die variety.

What would you say this coin is worth? Is it worth more than a regular flying eagle?
Thanks for the info.
Is this something to get slabbed since it is a variety, or is it in not good enough condition to be worth doing that?

The Flying Eagle looks to be in the VG level of preservation, possibly VG10. Your Morgan dollar IMO is a G4. Although the reverse rim is weak, it looks all there. Appears original and problem free - a few reverse ticks.

Quote: What would you say this coin is worth? Is it worth more than a regular flying eagle? This coin is worth a premium in higher grades because the important details are on the high point of the eagle's neck. I cannot tell by your pic, but if digits are still visible, then variety collectors would be interested. As to grade, I'm a little more optimistic--F12

IMO the Morgan is a G-6, flying eagle is F-12, but the reverse is pretty weak, so I guess it could go VG-10.

Even upside down I immediately spotted the die chip that marks the FE as a Snow-16. I've got 2 of these now(KurtS linked to my first one, the second is on the site somewhere), & both of them have a somewhat weak strike. Taking into account the weak strike on mine I think this one could go F-12.
