Previously, before putting a coin in 2x2, I wiped it with a napkin soaked in alcohol (the ones that nurses usually use when taking blood from your vein). So I wanted to wash the fat off the coin before I put it in a clean 2x2, but now I'm wondering if it's safe?

Good question, I have no idea, Never went beyond using Acetone - which I know is safe to remove fresh prints and stuff.

First and foremost, I would advise against ever "wiping" a coin with anything. Even lightly, if you loosen up debris, you are now pushing that debris over the surfaces, potentially cause hairlines and wipe marks. If you do have organic material they will not just naturally fall off with a soak, then I would blot or dab the surfaces lightly with a cotton swap (qtip) or even a cotton ball (qtip is my method of choice).
As far as alcohol, I have used it only a couple times in the past, without issue, BUT find it less affective than other solvents. I would stay away from the wipes, as I'm not sure what other additives are in there besides alcohol. Bitterants are also sometimes added to alcohol to deter consumption. To my knowledge they are harmless, but who knows what will happen if left on the coins surfaces for years. Not sure if others know.
Acetone is the go to for most, pure acetone. Xylene is another solvent I use, but is slightly more aggressive than acetone. Start with a light soak in acetone (1-10 minutes) to kill any oils, leave in longer depending on the extent of the organic surface material. Then with fresh acetone, you can blot the surfaces with a qtip and acetone IF needed. Fair warning, always use proper ventilation, especially with xylene.

I recommend 100% pure acetone and do not wipe with anything not even cotton swabs or cotton balls. Dip don't wipe. John1

My problem with alcohol and coins is consuming it and then making purchases I regret But as for using isopropyl alcohol as a rinse, there shouldn't be much of a problem as long as you let it completely evaporate and ensure that the coin is dry before putting it in a 2X2.

Quote: Not if your drinking a nice Merlot when offering on a lot! That's too funny and ironic..... This is a ebay message from me a couple weeks back: " Retail is my max as of now, $575, may stretch it to $600/$650 if you catch me after a few glasses of wine" Needless to say we made a deal a few nights later

Quote: My problem with alcohol and coins is consuming it and then making purchases I regret. That's what happens when you're left alone with a bottle, a credit card and internet access. Napkins seemed like a good thing to me. Sometimes it is difficult to find 70% ethyl alcohol in a pharmacy (people usually try to buy it for ingestion). Similar material is available for free sale. This is a soft cloth impregnated with 70% ethyl alcohol and possibly several other antibacterial substances to disinfect the surface. Quote: not wipe with anything not even cotton swabs or cotton balls. Why? Sometimes there may be remnants of dirt on the coin that have not yet had time to eat the metal and in this case it is necessary to remove the remnants of dirt and finger marks.

I needed a drink last night. I bought a 1 oz gold buffalo Jan. 30 then gold spot briefly went up and quickly fell down as of yesterday. Could have saved about $75 had I bought yesterday. I don't sell anyway, I keep it.
