Is PCGS the one that assigns a Morgan the VAM number. ? I have looked and looked at VAM world and I found a few that is close to what I have but not exactly. One obverse is close to a reverse VAM and so on. How does it work. I heard you can request a new number also.

I think VAM assigns the numbers.

Leroy Van Allen is the guy who decides what gets a VAM number.

PCGS doesn't even slab all the VAM numbers.

The listings on Vamworld may not be complete since new VAM's are published in occasional lists and may not be uploaded yet online. Ask the members on Vamworld discussion forum about submitting a coin for consideration to earn a VAM number, assuming it would qualify. There's two or three Vamworld members that determine VAMs now. Leroy has retired from doing this and turned it over to them.

Coins can be rejected, not enough difference to earn a VAM number. Minor die cracks, minor clashes, minor polishing lines etc. may not be enough. A couple years ago I submitted a Peace dollar to Leroy that was clashed, die cracks but he said there wasn't enough there to get a VAM number. It was still fun and I kept his rejection note with his signature.

Last I knew PCGS and NGC recognize and will label a limited number of VAM numbers, just the major ones I think. For a fee they may add a VAM number to a label, I don't know for sure, ask them.

I'll add this, according to ANACS:
Quote:
ANACS offers attribution and verification services for all listed VAM numbers, including new discoveries. No other grading service comes even remotely close to the scope and breadth of VAMs that ANACS attributes.
If you do happen to have a new one and it gets accepted, I believe ANACS will even put "discovery coin" on the label.

Does ANACS have a minimum number of coins or can you send in one or two.

I don't think ANACS has a minimum but it would be cheaper to use one of their 10 for $xxx specials. You'll have to pay more for attribution service of course. Keep in mind that they won't designate a new VAM, you'll have to get it designated first and provide documentation.
