This one looks great at first glance, an off center on a big straight clip and if you look closely there seems to be a bit of a second strike or indent just to the side of the big strike. Then you start looking at it under the scope, and some fishy things pop up. The little stress lines along the "clip" edge are not a good sign, and then the edge of the clip just doesn't look right. Finally, there is lettering pretty much right on the clip and it shows no distortion.

Anyway, I verified with Mike that this is a true off center, with maybe something else going on to the side, which has been wiggled until it snapped off to look like a clip. Someone ruined a very nice error coin.

I like it as is. Pure speculation, but the consistent nicks on the reverse makes me think it might have been stuck in a vending machine or something at some point. Maybe a pocket knife or similar tool was used to dislodge it. Thanks, Doug.

Nice analysis.

I wonder if the second, smaller "indent just to the side of the big strike" is what broke off the larger piece. I can't imagine the larger piece would hold up well to the die coming down the second time.

I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that it came out of the mint that way.

Perhaps it got "stuck in the machinery" or something like that.

After looking at it I am inclined to think it's a genuine error.
