While on drugs recovering from surgery I bought this crusty piece, and I love some crust. I probably paid too much, $125. Anyway, I managed to throw it in the trash with the envelope and packaging. I've searched to no avail, it seems to have vanished. It is just sad that a nice piece of history is now at the local dump. So what stupid things have you all done with your coins, what have you lost, thrown out or destroyed, I can't be the only one?

Yikes that is a bummer. Early in my collecting days, I scratched several coins by not flattening the staples on my 2x2s.

I had an English Charles 2nd silver Crown (1st type 1662) missing for almost 4 years. As it turns out, I had mislaid it along with a Mughal square rupee of about the same vintage at my mother's retirement village home. They were both recovered from rubbish about to be thrown out when we were cleaning her residence, in preparation for sale, after she had died.

I didn't do this myself, but its still a good story, I was asked by a friend, to appraise his Uncles coin collection, as he needed cash. He stated on the phone that it "wasn't much of a collection". My friend came to my house on a beautiful summer day and plopped a cardboard box on my patio table. Not only did he have some nice coins, but 5 of them were US gold issues ! Now the story ... on the bottom of the box, I spotted a key ring with a coin bezel. In the key ring I saw a Morgan dollar and thought "cool beans". (I love Morgans) The obverse was worn, for obvious reasons, but thought it to be around a F12. The year 1892 ... you guessed it ... a CC !!! How many years did that coin ride around in a pants pocket ... what condition was it in originally ... Yikes

Ouch!! Not a bust half!! I haven't made any significant mistakes, but this coin has a secret that bothers me every day! I opened up the package of this barber half that I received in the mail, and went outside to look at the coin in the bright sunlight. I dropped it on the cement and dinged the edge. The damage is at K6 on the reverse. I know... I know... it is minor but it bothers me so much! I only paid $30 so it wasn't an expensive mistake

I lost a low grade 1856-S gold half eagle through a hole in my pocket. I retraced my steps but coins like that catch someone's eye immediately.

I think(?) I bought the pair of Lewis and Clark early commemoratives. (At my age [81] memories are not always correct.) I was going on a short vacation so I hid them away rather than take them to the safe deposit box at the bank. This is on the order of 5-10 years ago. Considering the state of my "man cave" I'm going to have to take a day or two to see if I can locate them. Or maybe I did eventually take then to the bank!?

I collected a substantial collection of classic coins from grade school into high school. I stopped collecting around age 16 as I was following other teenage pursuits at the time. I remember around late 1980's or early 90's I sold a few coins. What I don't remember was why I stashed my remaining coins in very obscure locations, one here, two there. Forgot about all that until about 2018 when I started retrieving boxes of stuff from my mothers basement and began finding coins. After the first find I started checking stuff a lot closer. I've found a lot since 2018 but I hate to think how many may have been thrown away or given away.
