Wanted to show off this 1785 I'm picking up for $39 looks to be in nice shape for the age, wanted to see what y'all thought it might be worth, or what variety it is, and also make sure it's real. Edited by Matthew23 02/11/2023 11:44 pm

39 bucks is a bargain if it's real and non-details, as attested by the various pricing guides out there. But that's out of my league, thus I need to depend on the grading slabs for this kind of thing. My guess here is authentic but some kind of damage, environmental or corrosion or some such. Any case if you like it it's a great buy!

It's a 3.4-F.2 which is presently listed as an R2 for rarity which is an estimated 501 to 1250 known. Looks to have some minor issues but most of these do, I'd say you got a good deal on it.

Super deal - I can't seem to find deals like this for $39! I see this quality offered around $80+ all the time on common Connecticut Coppers but never half of that. I'd snatch it up quick even if its common.

Connecticut coppers are one of the few areas of early American coinage where you can still find decent deals. I just got an R5+ variety on ebay for $29, not as much detail at the one posted here though!

to expand on Icutler's statement: there were several collections of Connecticut colonials sold in the past few years; there are over 300 different Miller-numbered varieties, no one will ever have them all at one time, and now low-grade 33-Z's and the like R5's and higher sometimes go for a song. We talk about it all the time...

There was a FNDE (not listed as such and listed with the wrong date) last night for $39, got tempted but it was a bit rougher than what I like in my cabinet.

FNDE's are cute varieties, showing the Connecticut colonial coiner's relationship with the FUGIO cents (for those who don't know, Copper stock paid for by the Federal Gov't to contractors for the making of the FUGIO cents was... diverted)
