I was doing my occasional "window shopping" and ran across a lot that contains counterfeit coins. Several of them were obvious counterfeits (1804 dollar / "circulated" and "antiqued" 1879 Trade dollar / 1887CC Morgan, etc.) and I am assuming guilt by association with some others. Here are a couple of pictures of the offerings and I'd welcome any input the Community is willing to provide on these dollars. The auction house is very receptive of my input and wants to learn so they may be able to better detect these counterfeits in the future. Here is what I sent to them regarding the three coins below - please let me know if I need to correct anything. Thanks. Quote:1881 CC Morgan - Oddly irregular denticles on reverse with porosity also evident. 1881 S Morgan - Porosity / irregular denticles and wear patterns. Odd Machine Doubling on some of the reverse lettering. If you compare the 1881S and 1881CC, it appears that the obverse dies are exactly the same. I can't determine authenticity on this one for certain by the photos. 1889 CC Morgan - the CC mintmark does not appear to line up with genuine 1889CC MM placements. Note how everything looks just like the '81CC reverse - this is a sign that it may have come from the same reverse die. Once again, I can't say for sure if this one is genuine or not without seeing in person, but it also has the porosity, "ballooning" of devices and irregular denticles that are often seen in reproductions. This is one of the higher-dollar Morgans, so it has been reproduced extensively. "Nummi rari mira sunt, si sumptus ferre potes." - Christophorus filius Scotiae

Could you provide links to the auctions?

I appreciate the encouragement. When a business listens and makes an effort to do the right thing, I am very happy to help if I can. But, I'm no expert and wanted to be sure I'm not giving out erroneous info. The other five coins in the auction have obvious issues, but these three are a little more difficult to confirm.
I've reached out to other places in the past and they've politely blown me off. It's refreshing to get a positive response.

Bump, I'm not familiar with that auction site, and based on your posts it's not one that I wish to become familiar with.

They aren't a coin-specific house. That's why I wanted to help clue them in. I've never purchased from them.

They have been around a while. I do not recall hearing anything specifically bad about them.

The 89CC and 81CC are well known counterfeits as the same reverse was used on a lot of CC counterfeits. Note: on reverse, the scratch on the Eagle's breast and the raised bump above the D in dollar on both examples. Here is the link on the thread on the CC counterfeits: http://goccf.com/t/333577&whichpage=1

Their policy: "not solicit or involve the purchase or sale of counterfeit, stolen or illegal items"
"Email us, and someone will follow up with you shortly."
"shortly" is vague, and could mean a day or two or longer.

Thank you for the link to previous discussion. These coins are definitely related to that die. I've had multiple messages back / forth with this auction house - including their first about five minutes after I sent them my first message. They seem genuinely interested in getting this sorted.

Quote:"1804 grape bust Morgan silver dollar" Oh man, the grape bust type, that is even rarer than a regular 1804! We are used to seeing fakes on ebay, but it is a little more jarring to see them on smaller auction sites. I once bought a coin from APMEX that was simultaneously for sale on a rando auction, at best they were hoping to run it up over the ask price for a profit, at worst it was a flat-out scam.

All the dollars are not even the same size-but maybe that is just sour grapes on my part.
