Hi All
Having seen so many vendors selling counterfeit slabbed coins, I have started to worry about the few slabbed coins I have purchased.
I had checked the PCGS website to verify (I thought) the authenticity {number matched the coin etc. } but recently I have noticed that of course that is no guarantee.

Any thoughts on how I could/would do a better examination { I am of course reluctant to break the coins out the slabs and frankly none are really worth the cost and hassle of sending them out to a TRG }.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here is a list of Counterfeit Canadian coins in fake PCGS slabs that I am aware of.
The fake coins are relatively easy to identify by the markers. Vigilance is key. Buy from a trusted source and of course EDUCATE YOURSELF.

If you have a slabbed coin, and you have reason to doubt it, then
the slab needs investigation, because it follows that the coin inside may not be authentic as well.
In this sort of situation, it is logical that the slab must be authenticated before any consideration is given to break the coin out.

I must admit: I have far better access to the facilities to authenticate a coin than I do for slabs, and for me, that is one of the reasons why I prefer raw coins. A coin inside a slab cannot be investigated, and thus, the slab has to be destroyed for that to happen.

There are other members here within the CCF that can provide good advice on how to authenticate slabs, and perhaps avoid having to break the coin out.

Nevertheless if you eventually prove for yourself that the slab, is, in fact genuine,
I see very little need to destroy a slab, unless you are aiming for a higher grade, with a re submission, and that should have nothing to do with the authenticity of the coin.

I think that the KEY to your dilemma is to learn to authenticate the COIN, not the holder. Attend of of Mike's seminars for a starter if able. Do an archive search on this and other coin sites for examples of noth holders and coins. NEVER buy from a Chinese vendor on ebay and always check the feedback ratings if buying on ebay. Stay away from 2nd and 3rd tier TPG's. There are only 3-4 to put your money on.

If the coins you are talking about are not worth the cost of a professional opinion, then they are probably not the sort of coins that attract counterfeiters. I would say you are 99.9%+ likely to have good coins.

Just a follow up. I did come a across a US website a year ago that had slabbed coins where the serial numbers on the slabs matched NGC and PCGS numbers. Since the 'coins' were offered at anywhere from 25% to 10% of market value (american and canadian items ) I strongly suspected they were spurious.
I did bring it up to one the moderators here....not ebay so he had no advice; one of the TPG's ...the representative who answered was unable to give me over to anyone to speak to and although she said she would pass on my info never received a call back; and a seller whose pictures (and slabs had been copied ) had no suggestions since they had no loss

B-T-W one of the coins was a $10 'gold' coin supposedly from the RCM hoard rele ASE

Another suggestion, in the future if you are looking to buy a coin look for ones in NGC holders because unlike PCGS for the past 20 years or more NGC has photographed every coin they have slabbed and posted the images on their certificate verification site. That allows you to compare the coin in the slab with the coin in the image to make sure it's the same one. PCGS has only posted a very small number of the coins they have slabbed.

Photographic record good supportive evidence,
but cannot provide the detail that is revealed during examination with a 10X loupe, under ideal lighting conditions,
which is the industry standard for grading prior to coins being slabbed.
