Here's a chart that I thought was a bit interesting.

What-Do-You-Think-About-US-Mint-Sets?--Do-You-Collect-Them?--Are-They-A-Decent-Value?

It shows the price trend of US mint sets in terms of how many times face value that price was. The chart starts in 1968 when regular mint sets resumed. Before the 1982/1983 hiatus, the sets cost generally around 2 times face value. After the 1982/1983 hiatus, they were typically 2 to 4 times face value and only occasionally more than 4 times. Now, it seems that the norm is going to be over 4 times face value.

If you collect these sets, are you still getting them from the US Mint? or are you playing the waiting game and looking for their price to drop in the after market?

I stopped collecting US Mint sets long time ago. My dealer has so many that if I want a specific coin it's cheaper to buy from him. I may get a silver set if I like the series, but clad coinage is yuck. Very little interest in modern clad coinage.

yes, I collect the mint sets - both silver and clad ( I get 2 of each - one to keep in OGP, and the other to crack open for my Dansco albums.)
Do I think they are of decent value? Are you asking if the mint is selling at a fair price? NOPE! But I'll buy them anyway..
I do keep track of every set I buy so when it cones time to sell them off, I have a good starting point for selling.

I made a purchase a couple weeks ago that had me thinking about this. I bought a George Washington Com. Dollar in Proof at a really good price. I remember when these came out , I wanted the " Blue Box " uncirculated because I could scrape together the 8 bucks for it ( going from memory ) . The Red Box Proof was out of the question for me at the time ( 12 year old ).

But I always felt that " The Mint " looked out for the little guy back then . The chart in the OP ( and their pricing across the board lately ) is really a downer for an entry level collector . I mean 2x face value for a roll of quarters ( plus shipping ) ?

These days I only collect sets older than the late 80s, and only when I come across them at a good price (which does happen on occasion).

Do I collect them? No. But I buy them to open up and fill the holes in my albums since I am no longer good at getting new coins from circulation (a difficult task when I seldom use cash now).

I purchase mine from the U.S. Mint, and I purchase them for collecting, not to flip or expect an appreciation of their value. I have them in original packaging back to 1959, and even have the 1982 and 1983 (and several others) souvenir sets. I also have complete year and mint sets in three (or two) row capital plastic holders for mint sets for 1940 through 1958. These too are for collecting, not investment.
