Can't find anything on this mint. Has a star with LETTER "R" inside. Who is it? Got from dealer.

Anything on the 3rd side of the coin (the edge)? Reeded, plain, writing, engraved, stamped, etc.

Most likely from a private mint of some sort.

This may or not match your round, but there are many companies that produce/sell similar pieces:

I have some 1 oz silver rounds from the 1970s -1980s I don't know who minted them. Sometimes the private mints added a mint mark, sometimes not. The Indian/buffalo design is popular and multiple private mints made/make them. Yours with R in star may be the mint mark but I've never seen one, don't know how old it is.

Some of the big bullion dealers sell rounds/bars with their name or logo on them, I assume most are manufactured by private mints for them.

Some mints closed or were bought out, absorbed into another company. Here's some of the private mints I know of that may have or still make buffalo rounds, not a complete list.

No longer in business or bought out:
Engelhard
Franklin Mint
Olde New England Mint
Oregon Mint
Liberty Mint
World Wide Mint

Currently in business:
Golden State Mint
Highland Mint
Republic Metals
SilverTowne
Scottsdale Mint
Sunshine Mint
Mason Mint
Lombardo Mint

A bit off topic, but some collect old silver bars. Here's a link to a vintage bars database. They may have seen your R in star on a bar, you could ask.

It's not the Sunshine Mint (SMI), unless their older ones had that R inside of the circle as a mint mark, nor is it Golden State.

I'm thinking an older mint mark for perhaps Republic Metals Corp (in Bankruptcy). They use the Star with an RMC inside of it. It's plausible that they have used the "R" inside the star in the past.

Does the round weigh-in as a Silver Round, 31.07 grams or very close?

I see your conundrum when I was doing a little research for you. The round appears to be unique and not at all like the usual Buffalo/Indian silver rounds.

dsking, Thanks for pointing out Republic Metals is under bankruptcy, will be interesting to see how that turns out.

I have never seen an Indian-Buffalo silver round with the textured background surface like this one.

Happyhippo did a nice buffalo round compendium back in 2019 here on this forum but nothing matches. http://goccf.com/t/351823 and thats just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how many exist.

Interesting that it has an odd texture to it but the one troy ounce/999 fine silver text and font part of the design matches a ton of them besides the texture and logo of the star with R that are being sold currently. A few have radial lines as a security feature these days but not texturing like that I could find from a major mint (but one from an unknown source only). No matches on numista after viewing them all which has dozens of examples and its likely not a current one as its not on any of the major sellers based on viewing tons of bulk images in the different search engines last night indicating its not a regularly sold release currently. The logo is more similar to the Monarch Precious Metals or Elemental versions but those have different logos. Also No to the RMC buffalo @DSKING unless they made others with that logo and texture (both here and numista.) https://www.etsy.com/listing/133851...-fine-silver

This is a difficult task unless someone knows what the specific star R logo is which is the mint mark. These are privately minted rounds and it seems every mint... ever made them. Many online sellers even mention they are interchangeable as silver sales and dont even guarantee the design you get is the one shown making it harder. In fact many still use stock images. Maybe if you click every buffalo silver round to see the reverse image on ebay (as most show the obverse initially but thankfully thats also textured which should help) or try worthpoint which are the only other areas I can think it may turn up with lots of time to look - the amount of listings is going to keep you busy a while.

Also keep in mind there are counterfeits so maybe want to verify its weight and composition. The counterfeit silver bars and rounds are identical in appearance to the genuine bullion products they replicate, including stating the fineness of silver as .999 and weight as 1 troy ounce. https://www.coinworld.com/news/prec...roducts.html

datadragon to the rescue! Thanks, always, for your input!

I too was thinking "fake"...the round is a bit too much in design.
