Hello everyone. I'm new to the Forum. I recently started collecting and searching for coins. I have some knowledge of coins and errors, however, I have a lot to learn. I haven't had much luck with rare coins just minor offsets and common errors. I did stumble upon this oddity. It's a 1980 no mint mark Lincoln. It's thicker than a normal Lincoln 1980 or any other year and it's the same diameter. It's a little thinner than a regular nickel but thicker than a regular penny. Not a dime planchet from what I can tell. Any ideas? Oh and it seems to be a different alloy mix or something else. I'll try to post some pictures.

to CCF! We can help you when you post pictures of the full obverse, reverse and close ups of the possible error you see.

Thank you for the warm welcomes!! Sorry no weight or diameter. And the rim or collar? Appears to be the right upset? Or height?

NEWmrMatic, We will need weight and diameter. Also need pic of the reverse. Looks like a minor MAD and it looks cleaned? John1

I didn't clean it. Perhaps someone else did. It's Straight from a roll. I don't think it's a MAD, the reverse is centered exactly where it should be imo. The diameter is exactly that of a regular 1980 Penny no clue on weight. My concern is that it's thicker than all my other pennies and a little thinner than a nickel. It fits inside the rim of a 2022 nickel "snuggly". It's not just the rim/collar that is thicker the Penny as a whole is thicker. I don't have a grams scale ATM.
Thanks for all the responses. I'll try and find a cheap grams scale.

3.1 but it is definitely thicker and it doesn't stick to a magnet, whether that matters or not.

If the outside diameter is altered, it will be the rim taller. Weight will be the same, just the thickness of the rim was altered. This can happen during the strike, but if the diameter is reduce, then it was done post strike. Not a plus for the coin either way. I remember some of the 1997/1998 cents were like that. They were normal weight, but the rims were taller. Just the way some coins were struck. (Not a premium for these)

Thanks. Diameter is the same as any penny I have. Whatever Penny I pick to compare together it's always thicker and same exact diameter.

Quote: I don't think it's a MAD, the reverse is centered exactly where it should be The obverse is a bit off center, so that does make this a MAD (however slight) But if your coin is the same exact diameter of other coins, the rim does not appear to be taller than the rest of the coin, then the weight of this coin becomes very important. It could just be a rolled thick planchet.

3.1 Grams. Same weight as a regular penny. So a rolled thick planchet probably. Thanks for all the help, everyone!

Never knew these even existed. No premium but it is kind of neat.
