I don't seen many (this is the first I've handled) of these in Rome. In hand it is way more polished looking than the pictures show, but I bought it with the 1899 o Morgan below for €75. Curious to hear what folks think....

The FE looks VG-F and the Morgan may be an AU slider. I'd say you paid a fair retail price for the pair. Nice.

@bump thanks ... That's about what I figured. The guy knew the 1858 was less common than most of the u.s. coinage found in Rome.

Sounds like a reasonable price. The FE perhaps cleaned?

99-o looks au55 and looks great. 1858 looks polished. The coin looks to have too much detail in other places to show the breast, tail and wreath worn smooth.

Yes. it was polished; I know that impacts it pretty significantly. In hand, it has a clearly polished look. I think I got wrapped up in the deal. Here it is in hand....it is somewhere between those two colors ...

FE Fine details (polished) morgan AU55 probably details. based on these photos it appears that the surfaces are not original for a mid-AU coin. the coin is just flat and lifeless collecting US coins in Italy has to be a challenge

@pan... It can be. But I think overall it's been easier than I suspected. Frustrating at times... A guy offered me a 21 Morgan today for €450. A few weeks ago I bought a decent stack of 90% at spot(I posted under another thread)... So it's all over the place.
