I have acquired this USA 1879 One Dollar coin and it is in very good condition......and that is the problem. Is it TOO GOOD to be true, is it real or not ? weight is 26.8g. Numista 26.73 diameter approx 38mm. Numista 38.1mm It is not magnetic. But it just looks too nice or have I been lucky ? I know that you cannot be decisive from just pictures but perhaps there is something there that helps ? Opinions would be appreciated. I think you got lucky. In comparison with mine, I don't see anything that would tell me that she's anything but real. A little ding on the rim and the Eagles breast shows some wear and I don't see any indication of cleaning. I think that she came out of a well cared for collection. Let's see what others think.

Looks genuine. I don't see any of the usual markers indicating it is fake.

I don't mean to burst anybody's bubble but first it's a nice nice piece I do see the thing on the rim but I also see where it says America it looks like someone tried to scratch a "S" on it. If you enlarge the picture you can see it what do you think otherwise it's a nice piece.

Thanks all. I have looked closely through a lens and the S really is just a scratch, a wear/use nick, not a definitive S letter. Perhaps it's a good 'un after all !!!! Cheers Brian.

To me it looks cleaned, probably by being dipped. The surfaces are too even in color.

Yes, it must have been cleaned at some point, there is no toning at all, no discolouration, the surfaces are all very bright and even. Thanks all.
