I found this very colorful 1954 S Proof Lincoln Wheat penny in fairly good shape, what might have caused this toning? It doesn't look like it happened naturally, does this negatively affect numismatic value? Thanks in advance :)

Improper storage is another option.

By the way, that is not a proof cent. Proof coins prior to 1965 were struck at the Philidelphia mint and would not include a mint mark.

It is only a 1 cent piece so I would keep it. Looks cool.

Yes, not a proof. The toning is the result of exposure to environmental agents--possibly staining. No added value, but if you like it, keep it!

Business strike, not a proof. Toning is officially considered damage. So it's just post mint damage. Keep searching!
