I just purchased this 1931 s penny. I would appreciate your input on a few questions. What grade would you give this coin? Is it worth sending in to be graded? And lastly, what would you estimate its value? As always, I appreciate your help and just ask if you would like any additional pictures. (The first two pictures were taken with a cell phone and the close-up was with a microscope) [

Looks like some damage to the right of ONE. Might just be the pic but I'd say a details coin.

Steven49, What grade do you give it? What did it cost you? What is the general rule when it comes to justifying sending a coin in? Nice pics by the way. John1

For value, suggest checking sold/completed item information on ebay for a 'higher' grade '31 S. Given the images posted, I'd say this one falls in the AU-58 to MS63 range. Would love to see the coin in-hand. Nice!

Looks mint state, but hard to tell from the photos whether the marks above the right wheat stalk are significant. If it looks okay in hand, I'd say MS-62 or 63 RB.

Looks to be around MS-63 but the area next to ONE worries me.

There are a few dings but, overall a very nice coin. Low MS is my guess. That's a definite keeper. Nice Key! Congrats!

It needs to grade at least MS62 ($186 per NumisMedia) to justify all costs to have it slabbed and those scratches makes it iffy...IMHO. John1

I'm at AU58 details (scratched) if you look under that area the is a discoloration spot and it appears someone attempted to remove or hide it. bad move . your second obv photo has removed the glare and you can see the rub on the high points cheek, jaw, behind the eye a clean graded AU58 would retail for about $130. thats why you only paid $80. whomever sold you this knew it was a detailed coin. personally I would take it back to the seller and see if they would give me my money back. if I'm buying a high end key, saving a few $$ to get a details one would not be my choice.

Someone really messed that up trying to remove a spot. I'll say AU details (scratched).

MS details, scratched. It would have been better if the person that took the black spot off would have left it alone. That was some job of conservation on that one.

Quote: the is a discoloration spot and it appears someone attempted to remove or hide it. Exactly! Looks like they used a nail. Seeing that makes me doubt the rest of the coin, somebody messed with it. It's probably been cleaned as well. The wheat lines on the right stalk look extremely flattened, this is probably a cleaned AU coin.

Horrible conservation attempt. I'd say Unc details, definitely not worth grading.

Shame that a prior owner damaged it like that. I too would ask the seller for a refund and save the $80 to purchase a clean example.
