Found this error while checking my change. Could someone tell me what the cause of an error like this and is it worth anything?

If you are asking about the missing letters then it is because of grease being on the die when it was struck. There is not an extra value for this unless a lot of letters are missing. But it is still cool.

Yes a minor Struck Through Grease find—well done. Since the cost of ownership is low, you could keep this one until a more extreme example comes your way.

struck thru grease is more common in later years, so an example from 1977 is worth keeping
