It's a 5 lire Italian silver coin depicting Vittorio Emanuele II. I would recognize that beard anywhere!

Hi! Sorry cdngmt, but ALL the 20 francs coins, of Napoleon III or all the others (kings, emperors & republic) are ONLY gold coins, never silver! The silver coins series end with the 5 francs denomination, the biggest).

Hi to all of you! Julio, I'm not too sure that it is a Victor Emanuel II coin: yes the beard looks like his but the head overall, less to no! I would say the same about an hypothetic german coin... For me,for the moment, it is a mystery! However, I shall say that my most chanses go to a 5 francs of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, year 1852 (the prince-president, not yet NapoleonIII, emperor).

It reminds me of the 1866 Mexican peso of Maxamillion

That forked beard looks very recognizable, but I can't find a match on Numista... ...wait, no, it could also be a play of light. There goes my matching.
Some of the Vittorio Emanuele issues do indeed have very similar beards, but the placement and especially the bust termination doesn't match. Maximilian of Mexico doesn't quite match either. Louis Napoleon is facing the wrong way (assuming the photo isn't mirrored).
...now that I think of it, can we prove that it's not a gold coin? The original photo is black and white, and I'm not sure if we could tell the difference between silver and gold. Though I guess it's much more likely to be silver because gold usually doesn't get that large.

Perhaps it's Vittorio Emanuele as I said, just after having plastic surgery? Same beard, different face or head shape. I know surgeons who can do that.

By the way, I don't think it's a gold coin. I read golden objects, including jewelry, are considered to bring bad luck by the peoples of Western Africa. I don't know if someone can confirm this.

Love that head-dress, she herself would make a very nice design for a coin.
