Please take a few minutes and look closely at the background of this nickel. I just took this picture and all I did was modify the contrast, focus, lighting etc... Tell me that you don't see random images *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

I don't see any random images, lots of random circulation marks though. It is possible there could be some die clashing, but with that much surface damage it is hard to tell.

I agree with ICutler. This happened after the coin was struck by the dies and is considered PSD (Post Strike Damage). The mint doesn't make dies to produce coins like this.

Click on the hyperlink for Pareidolia and you should understand why your brain sees patterns in the random bag circulation hits on that coin.

the "things" you think you see aren't really there. no mint damage, just post mint damage

Yes, random circulation dings and hits is what I'm seeing. Looks like a few of the nickels (various years and mints) I found in several rolls a few days ago. Not uncommon. And yes, Pareidolia is lurking about.

take a new nickel, place it on concrete, press on it with you foot and slide it around, then maybe bash it with a hammer once or twice, and you'll wind up with something similarly beat up looking

Damage to a coin is never a mint error. Damage is post strike altering, regardless of how it happens.

All I see is random circulation dings and hits. If you look at a coin long enough, you can see anything you want to. I stared at a quarter long enough, that I saw Elvis chasing a peanut butter and banana sandwich. As stated above, Pareidolia.

I wish I could get you a picture that could show the coin better. I can understand that what I'm seeing can't be mint damage but it's there and I'm just baffled by how it gets there. I'm going to keep trying to get something you all can see. Until then.. from the twilight zone , goodnight
