Ok, so I know that RD is red, RB is red brown, and BN is brown and only refers to the color and not the grade, but does a coin have to be RD to be MS60 through MS70? In other words, does color play into the grading state or is grading strictly a matter of the sharpness of the coin features and or lack of flaws?

Color designation doesn't effect numerical grade. Luster, eye appeal, strike, and of course condition of the surfaces come into play as well as far as numerical grade goes. Color on the other hand is usually only applied to copper coinage, and there are plenty of coins that grade high numerically in all colors, but toning/oxidation also add to eye appeal, or hurt it, depending on the toning.

That has seriously been the best explanation I have gotten! Thank you so much! I should have clarified in my message I was talking about Lincoln pennies but you understood that and explained it without talking down to me or making me feel stupid. Honestly, that really made my day. The world needs more of that. Ok, now that I've got a full understanding, I'll post my best pennies no matter the color but still are in very good condition.

@KY nailed it. One slight addition for completeness - a TPG would add the color designation only on copper coins that grade MS60 or higher. There is no AU RD for example. Quote: I'll post my best pennies no matter the color but still are in very good condition. Bring them on!

You're welcome, if it weren't for new people joining the hobby our hobby would dry up. There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to coins. Best tips I can give to new people on the forum is to look at any photo before you post and ask...does this show the coin very close to the way it looks in hand? Also, as I stated before, a hastings triplet loupe will help immensely in 8x or 10x...basically all any TPG uses for grading unless they are doing variety attribution.

Asking is the only way to learn. Answering is what we are here for
