Hello!

Found this black dirty penny but it weighs so light, 2.7 on my scale. Can these old Pennie's deteriorate? Thoughts?

Your scale only goes to one decimal point (it really needs to go to at least two for an accurate weight)
so between that, the mint tolerance of +- 2.3g and the fact it has probably lost weight due to some
corrosion, it seems to be normal.

Anything is possible. I don't know the parameters but, .41 is minuscule and may fall within the reasonable weight parameters. The coin is pretty damaged so that may be the reason for the difference. We have other experts here that would have the parameters. Stay tuned.

Yes, worn or damaged coins can lose considerable mass. If you've ever seen a roll of worn Mercury dimes (or any other denomination) beside a "fresh" roll, you'll see the profound difference in stack height.

But wouldn't the words or image be completely gone if it was corroded? It feels soo light. I'm surprised it weighed the 2.7! Lol. Any chance it was struck on another type of coin or silver? Last question. should I clean it to see what's underneath the black? (Bad bad Girl cuz I know better but since it's nothing special, why not?)

Should weigh 3.11 grams +/- .12 grams. Your coin looks like environmental damage to me.

Parameters for normal coins is: Min: 2.98 and Max 3.24. Your coin past time in acidic environments and loose weight.

yep, sure looks like it spent some time in unfavorable conditions and lost some weight. It is possible that it started as a planchet that weighed in at the minimum before it lost more.
