Coin may have been buried in moist soil for a period of time. The color/staining/surface corrosion are the result to exposure to harsh environmental agents.

Discoloration on coins is from them interacting with any chemicals they come in contact with in the environment. Trying to identify every possible situation a coin comes into contact with is impossible.
