I have obtained a penny with questionable markings. The D mint mark is punched in excessively, as well as around the top part of Lincolns face. Could this be a mint error? Thanks for all the suggestions.

Damage to the coin will remove the plating, thus you are seeing the gray zinc layer under the plating. Once the zinc is exposed, then zinc rot starts.

Damage is always a spender on a coin.

Eventually these coins will go away as more oxygen affects the zinc planchets. Acids will speed up the process. But the coin is now counting down its days.

Coop strikes again, great educational information with photos. I dislike these Zinc Cents. They are the worst material ever used in my opinion. Thanks Coop for the information.

Agree with the above. A pic of the reverse would be interesting.
