Came across this 1998 D Lincoln Penny. The odd markings on both the obverse and reverse side appears to me as it got caught in something which made the circular marking but the lettering is what I had got the most confusion from. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts to help me understand the logic in what is going on here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
When the devices look wider, they are part of a Grease Fill on the dies. (Die event) When the devices are polished, the dies fields are reduced, making the devices smaller in size because of the widest part of the devices are reduced. When contact happens on the coins, the devices will be smeared into a new direction according to the damages the coin receives. So this coin has no premium. It is damaged and showing some areas of Grease Fill on the devices. So circulation damage happened post strike. The wider devices were grease filled on these dies. Only when there is very strong Grease Fill on the dies, will any value for these die events: So this coin is a spender. Put it back to work.
