US Mint To Introduce GC Mint Mark

April 1 - US Mint Spokesperson Rolen Dunhill today announced the Mint plans to open a coin manufacturing facility at Grand Canyon, Arizona. "Demand for coinage has surged following the pandemic. I am proud to announce The Mint will increase coin production by opening a new branch mint at one of America's natural treasures, the Grand Canyon," said Mr. Dunhill. The new facility is expected to open in time for the US Semiquincentennial in 2026 for which some 216 different coin designs are anticipated.

Coins made at the new facility will bear a GC mint mark. The Spokesperson also named several Official Sponsors of the Semiquincentennial, including Dansco, Littleton, and the Home Shopping Network, who will offer ten colorized versions of each of the 216 Semiquincentennial issues. Mr. Dunhill explained, "We received so many complaints from people who were unable to find W mint marked coins that we have decided to make more GC coins available." A joint marketing campaign known as "It's In The Bag" will begin prior to 2026.

When asked about the slogan, Mr. Dunhill replied, "Coin presses will be installed at the canyon rim, and the newly-struck coins allowed to tumble down into the canyon, where they will be scooped up with excavating equipment, dumped into bags, and dragged back up behind mules on bumpy trails. The public will be allowed to purchase the coins by the bag, which though not dirt cheap, will include actual rocks and sand of an America landmark. The GC mint mark is needed so collectors will be able to distinguish these coins from the typical output of the other mints. Let us cheer this new chapter in the history of US Mint coin production!"

Interesting...hmmmm. I'm surprised that NPS would do that! I'm a retired, 20 year, employee of the National Parks. This seems that it would (if true) violate their policies.

What a gimmick!

Each bag of coins purchased will be accompanied by a specially designed one gallon container of Colorado River water that can be used to wash the coins.

I heard it was on hold due to low water levels in the Colorado River. The only way to get the excavating equipment down to the bottom of the canyon is via flat bottomed keel boats. Pulled by the very mules that will be used to carry the newly minted coins back up to the canyon rim.

Presidents that reside on the coinage will also be making a special appearance to commemorate the opening of the new facility.

I have been retired/disabled since 2014 due to having a head injury, so I was around two-thirds through the main post before the words finally made it to the parts of my brain that still worked correctly.

Touche, Nick!

where they will be scooped up with excavating equipment

That would help facilitate the canyon to continue getting deeper and wider. Seeing how the river is almost all dried up, this is a GREAT idea.
