So this one I showed to a couple different guys at the AGM this past fall in Ottawa. Neither thought it was cleaned but one thought it may have been rubbed.

Does "rubbing" detract from grade and value the same as cleaning ?
Also can anyone suggest a good resource for provincial coins, particularly errors and varieties. A have a number of provincial coin's that like this one have a few things going on.
Thanks

Cleaned....many years ago and retoned a grey colour.

Too many hairlines for being 'rubbed'.

I think it's crappy lighting that's making them look Gray.
Here's a side by side that I hope is a bit better.

I'm kinda struggling with lighting techniques.

There's definitely surface damage from a very heavy cleaning, more on the Reverse, but the Obv does as well. If it was "rubbed" it was rubbed with something close to sandpaper, and not 100 grit or more. It has a couple nice die cracks at the R and A and all the way through NEW. The die wouldn't have lasted much longer.

I appreciate the feedback. Sadly nothing I can do about previous cleaning but still happy to have them in my collection. I wasn't sure of the the R because under the scope you can definitely see a split serif at the bottom of it so I was thinking repunched. There is also something with the top of the "I" in Brunswick.

The I in Brunswick is a die chip off the top of the I due to Die Deterioration. The R is all due to a die crack

Cleaned or not, the NB 5 cent is not common. I don't have one in any condition.
