I bid on but did not win this coin that finished yesterday. Thought it was a very interesting example of modifying an 1814 Lima 8 reales to capture the Mo mint premium!

Yes, as swamperbob has mentioned, China preferred Mexico mint.

The more interesting part here is the satirical(?) carving/reengraving of the bust... similar to a number of pieces we've discussed on here before. Can only find one of those threads right now for some reason:

I have seen a couple of these reengraved 8R surface from the Pacific Rim area in the past (the one linked above was Australia). I almost wanted to say that I remember another one of these also having an altered mintmark, but I think I've saved pics of just about every one I've seen and I don't see it.

I do wonder if perhaps Asia wasn't the ultimate source of these...

Bob?

I'm interested in swamperbob's thoughts as well, but I would think this particular engraving did not have satirical intent. A lot of the other engravings I've seen reverse the direction of the portrait or take other artistic liberties - this one looks like it was going for a more realistic portrait of Charles IV.

While we're on the topic of modified coins, I did also see another modified mintmark on a Zacatecas coin in the upcoming Stacks Hong Kong auction.

I saw the coin and thought it was very interesting because of the extent of the re-cutting. I tend to agree this was not done as a satirical piece but rather to make 25% extra money.

Since I first raised the topic of the re-cut mint marks on this forum, I have seen at least 2 dozen other examples, so they are still out there. They are more popular in the UK than in the US perhaps because they have been well known there for some time.

threefifty Great catch. I have to admit that I missed the Zs coin recut. That was VERY interesting, and I would have bid on that one coin but not along with the rest of that group.
