I was just curious if anyone ever buys a "Re-pro/Copy" of a Key date coin to fill your empty slots. I currently completed my Lincoln Cent Dansco Album W/Proofs. Some of my Key date coins (1909 S VDB, 1914 S, 1922, and my 1955 Double Die) are all in PCGS slabs and I will not break them out for my album. I just hate seeing those empty slots... Drives my bonkers..

Then break them out :)
You can always put other coins in the hole just to fill them, but it will never feel right until you put the real one in :)

if you have them in slabs and the empty space bothers you why not use an o8 LMC in their spot or put a photo of your coin in there ?

Yes, I own some very cheap copies of the 09 S vdb (MS 63)and the 14 D (EF 45) and I use them in my album. I also have nice copies of my 1916 SLQ (VF 20) and my 18/17 SLQ (EF 40)in my Capital holder for my set. No harm....no foul....

I have two empty spaces in my Dansco Lincoln Proof Album, 1909-S VDB and 1922 Plain, but I am going to wait until I can afford the originals.

Maybe just put less valuable one's in the slot, then when labeling them note the slab identification and code. This way it wont feel empty and anytime you or anyone else looks at the album, the fact that you have the valuable ones is noted. I would not break them out of the slabs if they are valuable.

In the Dansco Albums I use culls in the Morgans and put them in there backwards signifying that a slab exists for the particular coin. For Lincolns I use LMC reds in the same fashion. For Mers I use roosies. Any holes that exist are just that! nlp

I just leave the holes empty. If I can get the coins I will put them in, if not it doesn't really bother me to much. Although I have a lot of holes in my albums right now.

Make a label that states the grade and TPG and put it on a circulated cent and put it in the hole.

Quote: Then break them out :) I agree. My goal is not only to complete my Lincoln Cent set, but to complete my Lincoln Cent Dansco album. With that goal in mind, I would not buy a real high-end high-value slabbed coin to begin with. However, there is a good chance that my 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, and 1922-D Plain will all be purchased in slabs. Yes, they will be cracked and put into the Dansco album!

I'm considering using blank planchets and just engraving the coin info (with grade) and maybe the word "slabbed" on them to insert in my albums.

as much as I hate empty holes in my album I would rather have the empty hole than a reproduction coin in there. I never think twice about cracking out a coin to place it in an album so if I had a slabbed version and the hole was bothering me I would crack it out and fill the hole and maybe place the label underneath it or on the back page of the album like I have my 7070 album. If I ever have to sell I guess I would get it reslabbed before hand

I think that nip had a great idea with the coins reverses showing...that would cause the looker to ask, and then you could show off those slabed beauties....

For those who don't like to see empty holes, this is a tough question. In addition, there are a couple of other considerations. a. If the "key" is in a very low grade compared to its neighbors, might that not even be worse than no coin at all? b. Consider the Mercury dime set. You could get a slabbed G4 1916-D or you could probably spend the same amount of money and have a complete F/VF+ collection of Mercs minus the 1916-D. It's a costly dilemma for those who see the holes staring at them..........

Quote: if the "key" is in a very low grade compared to its neighbors, might that not even be worse than no coin at all? if that's the case then in my opinion the album isn't complete because I would never settle for a coin just to fill the hole and if I bought a key coin in a low grade it would just be another coin I bought not one that I could say was for the album Quote:Consider the Mercury dime set. You could get a slabbed G4 1916-D or you could probably spend the same amount of money and have a complete F/VF+ collection of Mercs minus the 1916-D. to me its not about how much was spent on each coin, it is the uniformity of the coins in the collection so again I would never be able to put a G4 coin in an album full of XF coins and feel the album was complete
