Hi John

Great coin over a US Large Cent - interesting choice of planchet.

Do you know the date of the cent?

I believe I own that ccc die type struck on a virgin GS planchet.

The date of the cent provides a no earlier than date for the counterfeit strike.

Very interesting. Why overstrike over a copper coin instead of silver?

I didn't realize how large the large cent is as I've never seen one in hand.

No date on the Large Cent or else John Kraljevich would have stated it ...

Based on the traces of Liberty's head and crest (see the point of the crest between the B and L of Republica) along with the height of the crest above the hair line behind it, the coin appears to be a Braided Hair cent which went into production in 1839. The preceding crest on the Coronet cent was shorter and rounder than the Braided Hair cent. The traces of the neckline and bust truncation appear to be a closer match for the Braided Hair type as well.

Such a date for the cent makes sense if the material seen most often with this counterfeit die pair is German Silver.
