I'm not a huge collector, but I am always curious as to the different types of coins and the mistakes in the minting process. I did find a 1979 quarter that has a weird mark. I can't tell if it's just damaged from time or it was actually made this way. Either way, I'm having a hard time distinguishing what it originally was. Maybe a D gone bad? Has anyone else seen this before?

@vpe, first welcome to CCF. Second, that looks to me like a mintmark struck from a die that was slightly damaged. More specifically, the tiny post on the die that forms the center of the letter D was broken and therefore when this coin was struck, metal flowed into that part of the design. This is somewhat common.

Actually the coin is damaged. If the die were damaged, the coin would be raised on that area. Because if it incuse, it is damage to the coin, not the die.
