Does anyone here collect the Red Books?
So of you may know me from other forums, and I have a decent collection.
Anyone else?

I have 1988 and 2004. Not a collection I guess. I would if I could ever stop buying coins and spend my money on something else. I think it's really neat to treasure old books so a fantasy would be to to treasure old coin books. Sounds wonderful.
How many do you have treashunt?

Thanks for asking.
How many?
Well a couple of complete sets, 1947 to 2009, including both printings of the 1947.
And, well, all of the special editions, many signed ones, and tons of others.
so, far too many, according to my wife. In fact I should start to sell some off, say about a couple of hundred extras, that I acquired by buying a collection when I only wanted one piece (did that a number of times.)

So how do yu go about starting or buying something like that? How do you know what fair market value for each ones is? Do they become more expensive or less expensive over time?

hmmmm I am starting to feel that old shopping addict urge take over. I must practice self control. lol They are very neat and the idea of being able to sit down and flip through and watch as values rise over time seems so interesting to me, Not to mention one of my favorite scents in the world is the smell of the old books.

What a cool collection, TreasHunt! I've never heard of anyone collecting Red Books. Do you know of many other people who do this?

malissa: As for values, you can check a recent edition of the Red Book, in the back there is a section about collecting Red Books, and as of last year, for the Blue Books. If you are interested (NOTICE: self promotion about to arrive): Whitman publishing is releasing a book: The Guide Book to the Guide Book of US coins. A reference about the Guide Book, from 1947 to 2009, including: Special editions, authorized editions, error printings, and related exonumia. See Whitmanpublishing.com, or wait for the next posting for the thread. It even comes in a special ediiton hard cover! http://www.whitmanbooks.com/Default...D=0794828221

Right now this is a real irritating subject for me. I collect the Red Books. I have all of them or almost. By that I mean not quite all. For Christmas, every year for many years I buy one for Christmas Gifts. When they came out with the ringed version, I gave out those and always kept a few of those for working copies. The hard covered ones went into my library. Last year I did the same as usual. The dealer I usually get them all from was out of the hard covered ones at the time I was buying them. I forgot eventually that I did not ever get the 2009 hard cover one. At the last 3 coin shows I've been told no one has them any more. I'll keep on looking but who knows? So like I said, I have almost all.

Oh I know they are still available but I'm rather cheap. I'm use to paying only about 2/3 of the normal price for that book at coin shows. Never could figure out how they do it. The spiral version for 2009 was only $10. Would have been the same for the hard cover version if my favorite dealer didn't run out. I know of a few coin stores in the area that also have them but charge more than I want to pay. HOWVER, it appears I am going to have to pay whatever now. I did buy the first one when they came out in 1946. Wonder where I got all that money.

wowee! Some of those are really pricey! I am surprised actually. I could see myself buying some of the lower priced ones but I doubt I will ever be the proud owner of the 1947s unless I get REALLY lucky at a yard sale or something.
Makes your collection all the more impressive treashunt
