I found this 2002 penny with several crater like spots. I'm still new to coin error field and was wondering if anyone here can tell me what might have caused this. The weird thing is it appears near the end of the word liberty but it doesn't seem to have effected the letters in that area. Could it maybe be a corrosion dome because I would guess zinc rot would probably effect the letters? Just my uneducated guessing though! Hahaha Thanks for all the help everyone! Its greatly appreciated!

There also appears to be some doubling behind the word liberty as well as if you look to the left of the indented to the upper left above liberty, the letter "U" from the reverse "United" appears to have been struck on the obverse side. It is lined up with the U from the reverse so I assume I'm not just seeing things! Also same with some letters from the in god we trust seems to have gotten slightly stuck on the reverse side where it is lined up with the letters from the front too. Just wanted to mention everything I think I see here. Very well could be mistaken of course! Thanks guys!

Incuse marks are damage to a coin post strike. Stains are surface issues of discoloration. They alter the color and not a premium for them. Check coins in a cup holder in a car. You will find a lot of altered coins tainted by soda and coffee issues.

@jbl, I haven't heard of the term "corrosion dome" before, but it seems to be a synonym for a plating blister. Is that right or is there a shade of meaning that I don't understand? Thx for helping me learn if there is a difference.

Also, you talked about a couple items of interest on the reverse, but didn't include a picture of this. Can you please add an overall pic of the reverse along with a close-up of anything in particular that you'd like us to examine? Thx.

Thanks guys. Sorry if stupid question. I didn't think it was valuable or rare, just figured I'd find out what exactly I was looking at here. I just recently really started inspecting my change closely and I find it so interesting and exciting! It can be confusing at first and there is a lot of incorrect info all over so I want to thank everyone for being so helpful and understanding! I can honestly say that I have gotten the most accurate information and the most help than any other source I've come across yet. You guys are the best! Haha I think its just zinc rot now, it appears to be thr top layer removed from those spots and I guys the letters remained because they are lifted higher than the surface.

I see no zinc rot. I see a substance on the coin,a stain. It is a spender.
