Can someone explain what happened to this one. I think it would be part of the post striking process but it could be pms as well. Has anyone seen this before? When looking at the rim, it shows no dings or dents.

Never seen one like that, very cool, I think I would keep it as a good example of Die Deterioration

Hopefully Mike Diamond will see it, I think there is more going on than just Die Deterioration. Maybe an incomplete planchet, that spread out on striking? Can you weigh it?

Die Deterioration would affect most/all the coin rather than selected areas, the reverse shows a sort of Blakesley Effect but there is no planchet clip, Struck Through Grease is the closest match I can think of, but that's probably wrong

I've seen similar results from the use of a high-speed rotary steel brush. It can remove some of the surface leaving this type of damage behind. The weight may be very slightly under spec.

The coin may have returned to circulation thus masking the modified areas with an even tone.
