I'm surprised. My grandmother kept her coins in a draw and never touched them and when she passed my aunt went hunting. A few years after my aunt made a shadowbox and glued the back of the coin in the box and that was 20 years ago. As far as I know it's not ever been cleaned. My aunt knows squat and when I popped it out of the box I didn't clean it. I'm very surprised. Thanks guys for the 411. The brown is actually glue on reverse and probably heat damage from the glue (hot glue gun used). It was so thick and it came right off when I pulled on it from the box, no cleaning on my end. I've not dont that to any of my coins. Anyway, no biggie. I appreciate you and your comments all.

with the above but also want to add that you may have thought the W is a mintmark but actually is not. It is the monograph of the designer Adolph Weinman; the actual mintmark area is to the left of Half Dollar along the rim in that small space by the rim. The only exceptions are the first two years of the walking liberty in 1916 and 1917 where they could occur on the obverse under the motto. Yours has no little letter D or S, so it was minted in Philadelphia.

@Mrwhatisit... thank you. I don't look at these at all. I'm not a fan. I learned something new and feel like a idiot lol. ( no mint mark and W is for designer).

Your photos make the coin appear to be harshly cleaned - polished even. If that is not how it appears in hand then some practice with your photo set up is in order. Quote: I learned something new and feel like a idiot Don't feel that way at all. We are start off at the same knowledge level and the purpose of the CCF is to support numismatic education. Now you know something about Adolph Weinman that you did not before.

i agree with the others. the coin has had a good amount of circulation so it was probably cleaned prior to grandma pulling it from circulation.
it could be the lighting but when you see a silver coin with that much wear and that shine you can bet it was cleaned at some point in its life. one sign of polishing, which I believe this coin was, is that the metal looks almost melted like someone took a torch to it and melted the details. this is very evident on the two obverse photos. hope that helps.

It's very worn. And I'm not great at taking photos. I noticed the coin was picking up lighting from TV and I was being lazy because it was a long day.
