I have been savings coins for 50 years but have only begun to study coins the coins I have collected over time. While examining a particular 1969 S it appears the last '9' in the date is different than the first '9', the last 9 on this particular coin is more of a 'straight legged' 9 as opposed to a 'curved legged' 9. I compared it to several other 1969 S pennies and it appears each of them has the a 'curved legged' 9. Just curious if I am seeing this correctly and if it is indeed a 'straight legged' 9 what might have caused it to not be as curved?
Please pardon my inexperienced terminology.

@jgr, first welcome to CCF. Second, it is not unusual for the last digit in the date and the L of LIBERTY to be somewhat angled on cents of this era. We have speculated before that the mechanical action of the payment mechanism in bubble gum machines may have caused this. I suspect that this is what is going on with your coin too.

Appears to be a circulation hit--post-strike damage. May have been mechanical in nature.

to the wonderful world of trying to figure out what happened to my coins.

I feel your pain here. I was in your shoes years ago, but the folks here have helped me to learn what can happen to a coin after it leaves the mint. (which as it turns out is a LOT.)
At any rate - I'm rambling here - The second 9 by the rim has been damaged - it got hit from a low angle and moved the metal over a bit. Then over the years of circulation it toned out to this brown color and hid the evidence of the hit.

I appreciate all of the responses and help understanding what the situation is. If this is typical of all responses I think I will like it here!
