Hey, I just want to preface that I have no clue about anything when it comes to coins. For all I know, this coin I have maybe badly damaged while in circulation. All I am wondering is if this is a mint error or not. I am aware the coins condition is horrendous, but after doing some searching I haven't seen anything like the scratch that is down the middle. Please inform me. Thank you!

Yes, that is a penny that has had a rough life indeed. That gash is post mint damage ( PMD).

First welcome to CCF. Second, yes that rim to rim groove is all damage--not a mint error.

Yes, it's damage to the coin. A crack in the die would cause a raised line on the coin, not a gouged line.

PMD, it is. Machinists and metal workers often used coins to test the tools of their trade. As for the subject coin, it appears that someone was attempting to cut this cent in half.

On another note, generally speaking, die crack errors are not "rare," being among the more common errors that collectors encounter. There are some exceptions though.

Just a nasty customer, hardly worth 10 cents.
