1992 D Cent Mint Mark Error Or Damage?

Any help on this would be appreciated. I'm pretty sure in 92 it couldn't be a RPM. It just looks funny to me, but I am also very much a beginner.

If it is damage, any idea how this would happen? Trying to learn to tell damage vs mint error. Thank you all in advance.

Looks like a little damage on the bottom of the D and some split copper plating.

I'm thinking possible vending machine damage--or similar. Clipped the end of the 2, as well as the southeast edge of the D. Exposed zinc core with the mint mark as well.
