Good day all. I have a graded Morgan dollar but seems like theres a few vams on it. When a coin gets graded do they look for vams or just grade it? I'm new to coin collecting so any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi John. Thank you for your reply but I'm not asking what VAM it is I know what VAM is on the coin. Asking if the graders check for vams or not?

@mar, first welcome to CCF. Second I'm going to move this thread to our VAM section to help get you a better answer. By your statement that "there's a few VAMs on it", I'm not positive that you are using the generally accepted definition.

John answered your question, but you're confused. You have to ask the TPG for VAM attribution and pay extra to have it done. In other words, no they do not openly look for vams, unless you bring it to their attention. Saying "This has a few vams" then claiming you know which "one" makes zero sense. Their aren't multiple vams per coin, but rather 1.

Thank you for all the replies and advice. I'm super new to this and I was looking at the coin and thought I had the VAM 100 and 171, also a die crack on the rim and doubling on the letters that I couldn't find on the VAM list. Ill have to send it in and checked out. Thank you all.

I assume the coin is an 1878-P, not an 1887, and you think this might be a VAM-171. I'm not convinced that it's a tripled R. Your photo is pretty good, so it might make sense to post full coin images of the obverse and reverse here, as well as closeups of a few pickup points, so we can help with the attribution. Then you can decide whether it's worth sending it in to confirm the variety attribution.
