I just wanted someone's opinion on what this is. I've got a 2019 p dime and it seems to have what looks like a mole on his face by nose. Anyone familiar with any errors such as this?

If you post a coin in the wrong place, don't post it again. Ask the Mods to move it . You do so by clicking on the "Report this post to staff" button. Bottom right of all post

And not an error. It's just something that happens during the normal life of the die. It's called a die event.

I would say around 10% of 2019 dimes will have some sort of die chip on it.

I appreciate the answer but just for my knowledge wouldn't a die chip be chipped into the coin? The spot on the dime seems to be raised as opposed to into the coin.

Chip can mean a chip out of something or a chocolate chip cookie.

You have to think backwards. A chip out of the die means what it says, it's a chip out of the die. Which means that chip is missing on the die. When it stamps the coin, the metal would fill in the chip. In order for it to be indented into the coin, it would have to be something added to the die.

Th3ch0s3n0ne, welcome to the community!

I'm new to numismatics (coin collecting), too. I have found dozens of these types of events, especially on dimes! I just found a "run" of die chips on the reverse of 2023 dimes on the oak branch (the one to the right of the torch), with each successive dime having a larger chip on it. Are they worth anything? Eh, you might be able to get a buck or two on ebay for a really big die chip, but it's not anything particularly special or valuable. From what I've gathered in the 4-6 weeks of digging into coins, most will tell you to spend coins with die chips like every other regular dime. Personally, if I can find a run like the one I found today, I keep them as a fun example of how die wear occurs and how long it takes for the quality control experts at the mint to catch it.

If it's interesting to you, keep it. If it's not worth it, don't. You can try your luck on ebay, or toss it in the discard pile and keep searching. I collect with my son, and he and I like finding all sorts of oddities. Most of them are "worthless", but the time spent together is priceless.

Happy hunting!
