Why is this 2.53g and what is the error on the reverse?

Could it be a foreign planchet?

That is a bit low on weight. Rather than an off-metal planchet, I'd sooner think you have a thin planchet. That might explain the overall weakness of Abe's head. I'm not positive though and look forward to a good discussion on this one.

Agree with Spence (above). Nice reverse pre-cud. Would be interesting to see an end-on shot of the coin (to get a feel for thickness).

Nice pre-cud indeed, and thin planchets do show up now and then.

It is pre Cud RCD-1C-1940S-03R. You can see that one, and verify yours, at: http://cuds-on-coins.com/lincoln-ce...-cuds-1940s/

As noted, the weight is indicative of a thin-rolled planchet, so seems like a pretty nice find overall!

The pre Cuds on 1940-S, and there are a lot of them, tend to go for $8-10. The thin planchet would probably double that, so likely in the $16-20 range.

With that much underweight I wouldn't think it would strike up that well. But I don't know what else it would be. Nice find.
