Is this 1942 "P" Nickel an unusual coin? I'm trying to learn how to identify errors and rare coins as a hobby and I need help with this one. I have seen some of these exact coins in great condition sell for quite a good amount of money but not sure if this one that I have is worth more than the amount printed on it. To me, in comparison with other nickels from the 40's it just looks different. The first letter "o" and both of the letter "L" in the word "Monticello" look much less embossed than all the other letters in the word. Is this product of a double die? The coin has some wear but it looks like there is a possible "Second Eye" on Jeffersons cheek that has been worn down. This is just my second coin as a novice collector that I am trying to I.D. Looking forward to any news, good or bad from more experienced eyes!

It's worth more than 5 cents because it has silver in it

Welcome to a great hobby! I would suggest picking up the RedBook of US coins, and studying up on the minting process. It is a great hobby and there are many ways to pursue it, errors and varieties are one way. First thing you would need to do is learn what errors and varieties are, and how they happen. Just looking for random differences in coins will drive you crazy in a hurry! The weakness of a couple letters on your coin are most likely caused by a slightly filled die or just plain old wear on the coin. Another eye on the cheek is something that really just can't happen in the minting process and is just from random circulation marks.

to the CCF

Your coin is a 35% silver War Nickel and is identified by the large mint mark placed above the dome of Monticello.

Everything else going on with the coin can be explained as normal circulation wear/damage.

Agree with all above. Silver isn't a bad thing.
