Hi all. I was given an offer by a gold dealer for this 1897 Liberty Head $10 Gold Eagle. The weight is 16.4g, a bit too less I think. In addition, I think it is also missing some details. However, I am not an expert when it comes to those types of coins. I did not purchase the coin yet because it makes me suspect that this is a fake. Any opinions? Many thanks, Chris

Not a fan of the straight line cut on the back. If they have a Sigma I would check it for gold purity.

Details are very soft and as noted above it appears it may be a cast fake. Weight should be 16.7 g.

I think it is ex-jewelery

Tungsten has almost the same density as gold. A fake with a tungsten core would easily pass XRF detection, and weigh exactly the same as genuine. The easiest and cheapest way to detect this type of die struck fake is with a comparative ping tone test; ultrasonic testing techniques can also be used. That can't be done if the coin is slabbed, but fortunately a good TPGrader of recognized reputation can usually be relied upon.. This one isn't slabbed and therefore can still be thoroughly investigated.
If it cannot be independently confirmed as genuine before purchase, then don't bother with it; there are lots of other nice $10 gold Eagles out there.
My personal approach to buying any coin of significant value has always to closely examine it in hand before deciding to buy.

The pics are poor but I don't get a warm feeling from this one. It might be genuine but is ex-jewelry and not worth buying imo.

Appears to be a genuine circulated coin, would need further testing to confirm.
